About your consultation

What should I ask my surgeon during my consultation?

Some popular questions Dr Johnny Kwei receives during his consultations include questions regarding his qualifications, his experience with the particular procedure you’re seeking or enquiring about, what the surgery and recovery from surgery may entail as well as the costs associated.

Do not hesitate to ask Dr Johnny Kwei any questions that you may have, even if you might think that they’re self-explanatory or silly. There is no such thing as a silly question, especially when it comes to preparing for plastic surgery and Dr Kwei aims to ensure all of his patients feel as comfortable, informed and assured as possible.

How do I pick the right surgeon?

Picking the right plastic surgeon for you is an entirely personal decision and should not be influenced by anyone else except yourself. When trying to decide between plastic surgeons, you should check their:

  • Qualifications and titles (Does your surgeon have a FRACS title? This means this surgeon has undergone a minimum of 12 years of medical and surgical education, including at least 5 years of specialist postgraduate training.)
  • Display of surgical skills (Does this surgeon have a visible online gallery e.g. on their website or post their patient’s results on their social media? Be sure to check both of these factors and also their tagged posts on social media for a better understanding.)
  • Transparency about risks (Is your surgeon open about the costs associated, the potential risks and factors to consider or give their honest opinion about the goals you wish to achieve i.e. if the surgeon believes the size of breast implants you wish to have, are they open about the potential health risks of going this big?)
How much will my procedure with Dr Johnny Kwei cost?

Costs will vary depending on various factors. These factors may include how long you stay in the hospital, the anaesthetist’s fees, as well as the surgery fees (depending on the surgery and your case).

For this reason, Dr Johnny Kwei has not listed surgery costs or price estimates on his website for his procedures as any associated costs and hospital fees will be discussed during your initial consultation with Dr Johnny Kwei.

Will Medicare cover my surgery?

While a lot of plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures do have an MBS item number (meaning a minority of the surgery is eligible to be covered by Medicare), not all surgeries are covered.

To check if the surgery you are seeking is covered by Medicare, you can take a look at the Department of Health’s MBS Online website or contact Dr Kwei’s office for more information.

About your surgery

Do I need to pack a hospital bag for plastic surgery? If so, what should I bring?

If you are booked for an overnight stay at the hospital following your surgery, you’ll need to bring an overnight bag (not too big) to ensure your stay is as comfortable and smooth as possible.

Some of the following essential items Dr Johnny Kwei and his patients have advised bringing include:

  • Mobile phone and phone charger (longer cords are advised)
  • Pyjamas (nighties, shorts, button-down shirts or anything “roomy” is advised)
  • Loose clothing (yoga pants, tracksuits, zip-front hoodies or a warm jacket is great) and, of course, underwear
  • Flat shoes or night slippers, and socks
  • Surgical garments (this should be discussed during your consultation and pre-purchased)
  • Travel size toiletry essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, if you deem necessary, or dry shampoo is great, deodorant, soap, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, hairbrush and hair ties).
  • Skincare essentials (Optional, should you deem it necessary: facial skin cleanser, moisturiser, lip balm or hand creams).
  • Glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids if you require them.
  • Reusable bags or tote bags (similar to a small beach bag, these bags are a great essential to ensure you keep all your essentials together and do not lose anything while staying in hospital for your recovery).

Some previous patients of Dr Johnny Kwei have also advised that bringing some “little luxuries” for your hospital stay is a great option. These have included:

  • Entertainment: laptop, iPad (with respective charging cables), books, magazines, headphones or earphones.
  • A reasonably sized water bottle.
  • A neck pillow (a lot of women of Dr Johnny Kwei have mentioned that using a neck pillow as an underarm pillow for elevation is a great little bonus to have).
  • Makeup (this does not apply to patients who are undergoing any form of facial aesthetic surgery)
  • Pre-packaged snacks (it’s not uncommon for patients to bring some small, packaged comfort food with them such as crackers, lollies, chips or muesli bars). Some patients have also recommended tea or coffee sachets if you have a favourite.
  • Cash (there are vending machines and cafés around the hospital so should you decide to go for a wander, be sure to keep cash handy)

If you are unsure if you should or can bring an item, call our front desk staff or leave an enquiry online to discuss this.

Can I have more than one plastic surgery procedure at once?

Yes. In fact, it’s not uncommon for patients to undergo more than one surgery at once.

For example, lipo-abdominoplasty is the combination of both abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposculpture. Or, some women opt for what’s known as an augmentation mastopexy; the combination of breast augmentation (implants) and a breast lift.

If you are considering more than one surgery, speak to Dr Johnny Kwei’s team today to arrange a consultation or leave an enquiry online.

What is the difference between plastic and reconstructive surgery?

Generally, plastic (or cosmetic) surgery aims to conceal a cosmetic concern, augment or improve the appearance of something (i.e. opting for breast implants if you feel your breasts are uneven or wish to upsize and improve their overall appearance).

While reconstructive surgery aims to regain the functionality of something or reconstruct something that has been lost (i.e. breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery).

Can plastic surgery be reversed?

This answer ultimately depends on what surgery someone is wanting to reverse.

For example, if you’ve had a breast augmentation recently or in the past and wish to have your implants removed, Dr Johnny Kwei offers breast implant removal (explants) surgery.

However, undergoing any form of plastic surgery is transformational, thereby, removing breast implants may not guarantee your previous appearance before the surgery as your skin and body has stretched to fit your new implants.

The most common solution to someone feeling unsatisfied with their surgery is a revision surgery. If you wish to discuss your revision surgery options, contact Dr Johnny Kwei’s office to arrange a consultation.

About your recovery

Can I recover from plastic surgery if I have children to look after?

While spending time in hospital, of course, many mothers can’t wait to see their children.

However, to ensure your recovery is stress and responsibility-free, and ultimately as smooth as possible, it’s not uncommon for some mothers to arrange with their partner or another family member (e.g. grandparents, etc.) to look after their children even just for the first few days to first week post-surgery.

Pro-tip: Ensure you have set up a calm, relaxed recovery environment for when you arrive back home. This may include gathering pillows, blankets and a sufficient amount of groceries (even pre-prepped meals) so you have little need to move around or risk hurting yourself.

Will there be scarring after plastic surgery?

Scarring is inevitable with any invasive procedure. If scarring post-surgery is a concern of yours, be sure to elaborate on this during your consultation and Dr Johnny Kwei will let you know of any options, whether that be a different type of incision or post-operative scarring treatments such as medical-grade ointments or treatments people opt for.

Will I need to come back for follow-ups after plastic surgery?
Yes.  Dr Johnny Kwei’s practice will arrange multiple follow ups for you to monitor your healing and post surgery results, and in some cases, remove suture at some of the earlier follow ups.

You will also be required to have post-operative photos taken, which will allow Dr Kwei to accurately review your results and recovery.’
